Speculation arises: Will PBA step in to aid Gilas Pilipinas in Asian Games?

Could the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) step in to support Gilas Pilipinas at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China?

Amid speculation about a potential withdrawal by the Tim Cone-led Gilas team, the PBA is exploring a last-ditch attempt to send a representative to the Asian Games.

The PBA’s battle cry for the country’s participation in the Asian Games is
“Pull out is not an option. Laban kung laban.”

In the past, the PBA has stepped in to prevent a Gilas Pilipinas withdrawal from the Asian Games men’s basketball competition.

In 2018, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas contemplated withdrawing Gilas Pilipinas from the Asiad due to a shortage of available players.
The PBA intervened by fielding a team backed by the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, along with Jordan Clarkson, to represent the Philippines in the Asian Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Coach Yeng Guiao eventually led the team to secure a fifth-place finish in the basketball tournament.

Currently, Gilas Pilipinas is confronted with similar manpower issues, as four of coach Tim Cone’s players are facing eligibility concerns from the Hangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee.

The question now is whether the PBA can once again step in as a savior for Gilas Pilipinas in this situation.
