Cristiano Ronaldo, Al Nassr beat Persepolis in AFC Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo and Al-Nassr took advantage of a shorthanded Persepolis as they scored a 2-0 victory in the group stage game of the AFC Champions League on Tuesday night (Wednesday, Manila time) at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran, Iran.

The Iran-based Persepolis was reduced to 10 players early in the second half after Milad Sarlak was sent off the match as he stepped on Ronaldo’s foot during a midfield battle.

The Saudi-based Al-Nassr took the lead in the 62nd minute as Persepolis’ Daniel Esmaeilifar committed an own goal violation when he accidentally tapped in a strike by Al Nassr’s Abdulrahman Ghareeb.

Mohammed Qassem doubled Al-Nassr’s lead in the 72nd minute as he lashed his shot past Persepolis goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand from a tight angle on the left.

“The first half was a little bit difficult for both teams, but we played well in the second half; we created some chances and scored two goals, and I think we deserved to win,” said Al-Nassr forward Sadio Mané.

Al-Nassr, which took the early lead in the Pool E standings with 1-0-0, will next face Istiklol FC of Tajikistan on October 3 at the Al Awal Park at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
