Gilas Pilipinas women’s team crashed out of the 19th Asian Games women’s basketball competition after bowing to South Korea, 93-71, in the quarterfinals late Monday at the Shaoxing Olympic Sports Centre gymnasium.
The South Koreans used an 11-2 run late in the opening period to seize control of the match, forcing the nationals to the defensive.
By the end of the first period, South Korea was already up 23–13, and this widened to a 25-point gap.
Khate Castillo paced the Gilas women with 18 points. Jack Animam added 15 points and 14 rebounds in a losing effort that had the Filipinas reduced to tears.
“I’m proud of these girls for what we achieved here together. Nothing to be ashamed of,” said head coach Pat Aquino. “They fought well with pride and honor.”
The Filipina cagebelles ended their bid with a 2-2 record, losing their last two games against powerhouses Japan and South Korea.
The Sokors and Japanese will now tangle in the semifinals, while China and North Korea clash in the other Final 4 pairing.
