China earned a semifinal date with the Gilas Pilipinas in the 19th Asian Games men’s basketball after scoring an 84-70 triumph over South Korea in the quarterfinals on Tuesday afternoon at the HOC Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China.
Du Runwang spearheaded the offense for host China with 16 points, while Hu Jingju and Hu Mingxuan contributed 14 and 10 markers, respectively.
China were solid with their offense in the opening quarter as they built a 20-12 advantage. It grew further in the second period with their outside shooting for a 50-29 halftime score.
The Chinese’s advantage widened further to 66-44 after three quarters, but South Korea attempted to make a run in the fourth quarter but could only come to as close as 14 points.
Ra Guna or Ricardo Ratliffe top-scored for the South Koreans with 16 points, while Korean Basketball League veteran Hongseok Yang added 14 markers.
China will return to action on Wednesday night for their semifinal encounter with the Gilas Pilipinas, an 84-83 winner over Iran in their own quarterfinals game on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wednesday semifinals game will be China and Gilas Pilipinas’ first encounter since their 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup on September 2, where the latter won 96-75.
