Vietnam’s top scorer, Nguyễn Thị Bích Tuyền, has broken her silence on social media regarding her sudden withdrawal from the upcoming World Championship, a move that stunned fans and her own team just days before the tournament.
In a statement shared by volleyball fansite Volleytrails, Tuyền explained that her decision was not due to a lack of desire to compete but stemmed from new athlete eligibility requirements set by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB).
“For me, sports are not only about competition but also about respect and fairness. I feel that these new regulations lack transparency and the fairness necessary for athletes. I believe every athlete deserves to compete in an environment that is respectful and equal,” Tuyền said.
She added that she did not want to put Vietnam’s campaign at risk:
“To protect my integrity and avoid unnecessary risks for the team, I have decided to withdraw. I will use this time to focus on training and preparing for future competitions. I believe that with proper preparation, the Vietnam team will continue to give their best and achieve new successes.”
In her full message, Tuyền also thanked fans and recalled Vietnam’s historic victory over Thailand in the SEA V.League as one of the highlights of her career.
“Winning the second leg of the SEA V.League is a testament to our continuous effort and a dream come true. The historic victory over Thailand will remain the most beautiful memory of my career,” she wrote.
Her announcement came a day after head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet revealed that the star opposite hitter had unexpectedly withdrawn.
“This morning, Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen submitted a request to the coaching staff to withdraw from the Vietnam women’s volleyball team. We have reported this to the Vietnam Volleyball Federation. I, along with the whole team, was shocked by Tuyen’s decision. However, since she withdrew due to personal reasons, the entire team respects her choice,” Coach Kiet said, as quoted by Thanh Nien.
Despite the setback, he stressed that Vietnam had prepared contingencies:
“From the start, I’ve built this team on a collective style of play. Having Bich Tuyen is a big boost to our performance, but the coaching staff has also prepared alternatives in case she’s not around. Tactically, it won’t disrupt us too much. The entire team will stay committed to our set plans and goals.”
With Tuyền’s exit, Volleytrails confirmed that Vietnam will compete with only 13 players at the World Championship.
