Thompson laments crucial non-call on potential game-winner

Scottie Thompson of Barangay Ginebra expressed disappointment that the referees did not call a foul against Mark Barroca of Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots in the dying seconds of their match-up on Sunday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
The Hotshots mounted a comeback from a 26-point deficit, seizing a 92-91 lead with only 11.5 seconds remaining. With possession favoring Ginebra, they executed a give-and-go play involving Thompson, the one-time MVP, attempting a lay-up against Barroca’s defense.

Thompson missed the potential game-winner but contends that he was fouled on the play.

“Iba-iba ‘yung tingin nila. For me, foul para sa’kin nung nakita ko ‘yung replay,” Thompson told reporters after the game. “Pero, ‘yun nga, baka hindi clear lane ng referee.”

Unable to challenge the non-call due to a timeout shortage, Ginebra fouled Magnolia’s Jio Jalalon after Thompson’s miss. Jalalon split his free throws, extending their lead to two, 93-91.

The defending champions had an opportunity to force the game into overtime, but Christian Standhardinger missed a jumper in the subsequent play.

Despite the heartbreaking result, Thompson vowed that his team would learn from their mistakes.

“We’re gonna learn from this. Lahat ng teams very tough, kailangang maging ready,” he continued. “Of course down kami, but early pa sa season namin. But ‘yun nga sabi ko, good thing nangyari sa amin ‘to ngayon. Bigger picture.” (MJD)
