UAAP downgrades Mark Nonoy’s second unsportsmanlike foul of the season

De La Salle Green Archers guard Mark Nonoy escaped a one-game suspension after the UAAP reclassified the unsportsmanlike foul he committed in their last game against the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

In a statement, the UAAP reclassified Nonoy’s unsportsmanlike foul to level three. Nonoy committed the foul against Ateneo’s Ian Espinosa during the second quarter of their match-up. That was his second unsportsmanlike foul of the season; the first one happened on November 5 against the UP Fighting Maroons.

“The play in focus unfolded as offensive player Ian Espinosa initiated his layup, only to encounter Nonoy’s contact that abruptly halted the transition/fast break,” the UAAP said in its statement.

“In adherence to the guidelines set by the UAAP Basketball Commissioner’s Office, aimed at excluding all Category 3 (stopping a fast break) and Category 4 (clear path) Unsportsmanlike Fouls from accumulation, Nonoy’s second infraction has undergone a downgrade/reclassification,” it added.

With the downgrade of his unsportsmanlike foul, Nonoy will suit up for the Archers in their Final Four encounter against the NU Bulldogs on Saturday.

Meanwhile, in a Spin.ph report, acting UAAP commissioner Atty. Mariana Lopa explained the difference between the unsportsmanlike fouls charged to Nonoy and to UE’s Precious Momowei.

“Under the FIBA rules, there are four categories of unsportsmanlike fouls, right? Clear path is stopping a fast break, and number one is not a legitimate attempt to go for the ball,” she said.

“Number two is a legitimate attempt to go for the ball but with excessive hard contact. That’s where Momowei’s unsportsmanlike foul was categorized,” Lopa explained.

Momowei served a one-game suspension for accumulating two unsportsmanlike fouls this season. (MJD)
