Magnolia thwarted Converge’s hopes of reaching the quarterfinals with an 88-80 victory, securing a top-four spot in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.
With the victory, the Hotshots gained a twice-to-beat bonus in the quarterfinal round.
And it came during Calvin Abueva’s comeback after missing nine games due to hemorrhoids and an injured calf.
Tyler Bey led Magnolia with 27 points and 13 boards, while Abueva added six markers, seven rebounds, an assist, two steals, and a block while coming off the bench.
After a tight third quarter, the Hotshots unleashed a 14-0 run at the onset of the payoff period.
This was enough to send the FiberXers tumbling to a 1-8 record and out of the race to the quarterfinal round.
Jamil Wilson had 19 points for Converge.
The Hotshots now hold a 9-1 record and remain at the top of the standings.
