San Miguel Corporation (SMC) is reportedly assuming control of the management of the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta Altas men’s basketball team.
Sports insider Snow Badua reports that SMC plans to appoint Olsen Racela, assistant coach of the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings, as the head coach of the Altas.
Current Perpetual Help coach Myk Saguiguit will stay on as one of Olsen Racela’s assistant coaches, but the rest of Saguiguit’s coaching staff is set to be replaced, as per reports.
“SMC takeover of Perpetual Help is imminent. As whispered to me by my good friend and reliable kuliglig InsideThePBA (X account),” Badua wrote on his Facebook page on Wednesday night.
“SMB legend Olsen Racela will now be the head coach. Myk Saguiguit will slide down to assistant coach while the rest of the coaching staff are given pink slips,” he added.
Racela, with previous experience coaching men’s collegiate basketball, notably with the Far Eastern University Tamaraws for multiple UAAP seasons, resigned from that position earlier this year.
Before the reported SMC involvement, the management of the Altas team was overseen by Gin Kings guard Earl Scottie Thompson, an alumnus of Perpetual Help.
If it materializes, this would be the second collegiate basketball team fully managed by the SMC group, in addition to the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers in the UAAP.
The Ramon Ang-led company is extending its support to the newly-crowned UAAP men’s basketball champions, the De La Salle University Green Archers.
In the past, the SMC group managed the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights, contributing to the school’s success with three consecutive NCAA titles under head coach Bonnie Tan.
In the recently concluded NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball tournament, the Altas narrowly missed a Final Four finish, securing fifth place with a 10-8 win-loss record.
