Chris Newsome and new import Shonn Miller led Meralco to an 85-80 upset against Magnolia, boosting the Bolts’ chances for a Top 4 spot in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Saturday in Iloilo City.
Newsome’s crucial free throws in the final 33 seconds played a pivotal role in helping the Bolts fend off the league-leading Hotshots.
Before Newsome’s free throws, Magnolia was just one point away from potentially stealing the game.
Newsome concluded the game with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists, and a steal.
Miller, meanwhile, made an impressive debut for Meralco, showcasing 33 points, 22 rebounds, and four steals, proving to be a solid replacement for Zach Lofton.
The victory propelled the Bolts to share the second spot with Phoenix, both holding a 7-2 slate.
The Hotshots, who already secured a twice-to-beat incentive, now boast a 9-2 record.
