A high school basketball player in Iloilo City garnered attention by scoring 73 points in an elimination round game in the Iloilo Private Schools Athletic Association (ILOPRISAA) secondary boys basketball meet.
Jid Locsin, the point guard for Hua Siong College of Iloilo Red Phoenix, concluded with an impressive 73 points, which included eight three-pointers, in their 115-41 victory over Assumption Iloilo on Wednesday.
Red Phoenix head coach Vincent Conlu remarked that Jid Locsin’s explosive performance was not surprising, as the La Carlota City, Negros Occidental-native had been diligently working on his offense during their training.
“He really has that ability to score; he has been working on that,” Conlu told Fastbreak on Thursday. “And siguro maganda lang din ‘yung gising niya, that is why he was able to score 73 points.”
Conlu also revealed that Locsin, a Grade 11 student, has captured the interest of De La Salle University Green Archers head coach Michael “Topex” Robinson, who observed him during last year’s Palarong Pambansa tournament.
“Actually, kinausap siya ni coach Topex last year, but he is not yet ready to go to Manila, so he decided to stay with us,” Conlu said. “Also, we are looking for a school kung saan he will have an opportunity to showcase his talents.”
Conlu has a roster of players recruited to Manila last year, including Thomas Pillado, Ricky Murillo, Matt Laurence Acosta, and Roy Malaga from the National University Nazareth School Bullpups, Karl Nonoy from De La Salle Zobel Greenhills, Yuan Reyes from the Lyceum of the Philippines Junior Pirates, and Ricarlo Po from Mapua University Junior Cardinals.
