PLDT High Speed Hitters’ new recruit, Mary Joy Baron, acknowledged that stepping into the position of injured middle blocker Mika Reyes in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) 1st All-Filipino Conference will be challenging.
Baron mentioned that replicating Reyes’ contributions for the High Speed Hitters will be challenging, but she is committed to giving her best while Reyes recovers from her recent shoulder surgery.
“Of course, malaking role ‘yung ifi-fill in ko kasi (wala si Mika). Isa sa mga reason kung bakit ako nag-PLDT is kulang sila sa middle blocker kasi nga magsu-surgery si ate Mika,” Baron said during the PVL Media Day on Monday night.
“Ako naman ready naman ako kung anong job ang ibigay sa akin ng coach, and I trust the system, I trust the management kung ano man ‘yung role na ‘yun, I am ready to step up,” she added.
During the same event, High Speed Hitters head coach Rald Ricafort disclosed that Reyes has been ruled out for the remainder of the season-opening conference due to the recovery time required for her shoulder surgery.
“Si Mika, nagre-rehab. Ngayong conference? Hindi. Hindi siya makakalaro. Nag-ano siya, operation. Same pa rin ng dati,” Ricafort said. “She will likely be available next conference.”
“Sakto naman nga kasi si Majoy naman ‘yung pumalit (kay Mika), so kahit papaano kung hindi man mas better pa, okay naman din,” he added.
The High Speed Hitters concluded the 2023 PVL 2nd All-Filipino Conference last month with a fifth-place finish.
