UST Golden Tigresses to rely on ‘utak’, ‘puso’ against towering DLSU Lady Spikers

The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses will count on their “brains and hearts” to counteract the evident height advantage of the De La Salle University Lady Spikers in their UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament match this Sunday.

Sophomore hitter Xyza Gula asserts that while the Lady Spikers, with the height trio of Angel Canino, Thea Gagate, and Amie Provido, hold a height advantage, the smaller Golden Tigresses possess their own set of weapons.

“Sa akin naman, heart to win lang kasi, sa height, given na na mas matangkad sila, pero height lang naman ‘yun, gagamitan na lang siguro ng utak at puso,” Gula said in a post-game interview on Wednesday night.

Rookie Angeline Poyos emphasized that in addition to their heart and brain, the Golden Tigresses aim to leverage their speed advantage against the formidable “Taft Towers.”

“’Yung height masyadong malaki ‘yung diperensya pero, sa part naman namin, alam namin na kaya namin silang talunin kasi kami kahit maliliit, nandun ‘yung bilis and gagamitan namin sila ng utak para manalo,” Poyos said.

In the recent encounter between the two squads, the Canino-less Lady Spikers secured a narrow 22-25, 25-18, 14-25, 26-24, 26-24 victory over the Golden Tigresses in the semifinals of the Shakey’s Super League National Invitationals.
