Phoenix derails Terrafirma for breakthrough win

RR Garcia delivered a vintage performance for Phoenix Super LPG as they halted Terrafirma for a 94-78 win in the PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

The former FEU Tamaraw stepped up in the absence of their lead guy, Tyler Tio, to finish with 20 points, seven assists, and five rebounds.

This enabled the Fuel Masters to score a breakthrough win after two losses.

Phoenix led by as much as 17, but it was not until the fourth period that it finally put away a pesky Dyip side following a 64-all deadlock.

“(It was) vintage RR,” said Phoenix assistant coach Paolo Dizon. “’Yung composure ni RR played a crucial point in our turnaround.”

Garcia said he merely facilitated their offense, feeding the ball to the open man.

“Sa akin lang kasi wala si Tyler e so kailangang magstep up. Maraming lead man naman sa amin, finifeed ko lang sila,” said the 34-year-old.

Jason Perkins had 18 points on top of seven rebounds and five assists. Ken Tuffin also came through with 17 markers and nine boards, while Larry Muyang scored 13 points.

Meanwhile, Javi Gomez de Liano paced the Dyip with 19 points and five rebounds.

It was Terrafirma’s second defeat in four games.
