Jia Morado: Alas Pilipinas, ready to face anyone

The Alas Pilipinas national women’s volleyball team is ready to face whoever is in front of them in the ongoing AVC Challenge Cup for Women, according to team captain Julia Morado-de Guzman.

The Denso Airybees setter said they are treating each opponent as a challenge and a learning experience, especially since they have only been together for over a week.

“Kami naman ang goal namin is to take it one game at a time; wala kaming iniiwasan, wala kaming hinahanap na kalaban,” Morado-de Guzman said after their straight-set win over Chinese Taipei on Sunday night.

“Kahit sino naman ang makakalaban namin magiging ibang challenge for us,” she added. “Good training ground for us talaga ‘yung elimination round, eh, so hopefully we have better results sa next round.”

Morado-de Guzman also stated that she was fortunate to be part of this batch of Alas Pilipinas, as everyone is capable of contributing when given an opportunity by head coach Jorge Edson Souza de Brito.

“We have a good mixture of young players and veterans; sobrang nagbabalance out talaga kami sa isa’t isa; it’s really a good blend of fire and engine,” Morado-de Guzman said.

“Our bench is pretty deep, kahit sino puwedeng pumasok and magdeliver, kahit si Julia Coronel as a setter, it’s good for us din kasi were a bit unpredictable,” added the former Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles standout.

Up next for Alas Pilipinas is Kazakhstan in the knockout semifinals on Tuesday night.
