Vanie Gandler unfazed by reliever role for Alas Pilipinas

Vanessa “Vanie” Gandler has no problem with her role as a reliever for key players on the Alas Pilipinas national women’s volleyball team in the ongoing AVC Challenge Cup for Women.

According to the Cignal HD Spikers volleybelle, she is happy to serve as a substitute for head coach Jorge Edson Souza de Brito’s starting hitters, Ejiya “Eya” Laure and Cherry Rondina.

“I am really happy to be able to help the team; you know, our games here in the AVC Cup are every day, so I know that my role as a second stringer is very important so that they can get enough rest coming into the semis,” Gandler said.

After seeing limited minutes in Alas Pilipinas’ first two games against Australia and India, Gandler got an uptick in playing time against Iran and Chinese Taipei as she replaced Laure and Rondina in the starting lineup.

In the two games she started for Alas Pilipinas, the former Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles standout averaged 10.5 points per game to help them finish their Pool A assignment with a perfect 4-0 win-loss slate.

Gandler also shared that she was not surprised by the perfect run of Alas Pilipinas so far in the tournament, even with their limited time of preparation.

“To be honest, with the preparation we had, we did not have much expectation, but I always knew that this team would fight, so I am not surprised that every day, everyone put their heart out in the game,” Gandler said.
