Bulacan JT Taipan coach Rezalde Africa Orillosa is facing heavy backlash online after a video surfaced showing him hitting one of his players during a timeout in their 77-75 loss to the Makabagong San Juan Mighty Warriors in the MPBL U-16 game on Wednesday.
The video, posted on the Basketbolista TV Facebook page, shows Orillosa striking Roberto Alcoriza Jr. in the body with a drawing board, then hitting him again on the back of the head.
The incident quickly went viral, sparking outrage and strong reactions from netizens:
“Wrong move coach wag kana mag coach dimo kaya mag handle nang pressure pala coach,” said Zevachedrynashgay Jordan.
“Wrong coaching , hopefully makasuhan,” according to Nino S. Ventura.
“Ouch masakit yan sa magulang na makikita anak nya sinasaktan kahit pa ng kanyang Coach. Verbal lang tayong mga Coaches wala physical contact lalo na sa minors. We are Coaching to nurture and bring out the best of our players lifting their spirits whenever they are having bad games—not to destroy and humiliate them,” commented Rodel Sumampong Quirog.
“Kung ako lang parent niyan tiplaken ka met ah nga coach,” said Eric Bedania Cabreros.
“The coach must face legal action. It’s abnormal,” commented Ernie Saromines Chavez.
“Mali Yan coach pwede muh sermunan pero wag muh saktan,” said Emiliano Dela Cruz.
In a now-deleted social media post, Orillosa defended his actions and said his approach was his way of showing love to his players:
“Salamat sa mga Batang Ito na tunay na nakakakilala ng tunay na ako Bilang isang ama alam Nila na bawat Mura ko sa Kanila Ang ibig sabihin eh I LOVE YOU Ang bawat tapik o sakit na nagagawa ko sa kanila ay ibig sabihin na tunay na pagmamahal at mga yon eh nagiging aral at nagpapatibay sa kanila bilang isang Tao di lng sa pagiging Basketball player at sila Ang nakakaalam ng bawat pangyayari sa loob ng pamilya o team namin.”
As of posting, the Junior MPBL has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident or whether Orillosa will face sanctions.
