Converge faces ‘good problem’ in PBA Rookie Draft

Converge FiberXers head coach Aldin Ayo said the team is having a “good problem” as they prepare to pick first in the PBA Season 49 Rookie Draft on Sunday at the Glorietta Malls’ Activity Center in Makati City.

According to Ayo, the seemed-to-be “boring” PBA Rookie Draft has suddenly become interesting with the last-minute inclusion of former UAAP stars into the 70-player draft pool.

“One month before the deadline, akala natin boring ‘yung drafting, and during the last week, all of a sudden, everything became interesting because of ‘yung mga humabol na magagaling na mga players,” Ayo said.

“Mapapaisip ka, and may mga players na nasa pool na not every batch may mga ganoong mga players. May mga players dito na pwede mong gawing foundation ng program. May mga players dito na they’ll be good for 5-7 years,” he added.

The FiberXers own the first overall pick in the rookie draft, but Ayo still refused to confirm if they would go for his former De La Salle University Green Archers player Justine Baltazar.

“Nagde-desisyon pa kami. Pinag-uusapan pa namin ni Boss Jacob [Lao] and Gov. Archen [Cayabyab] kung sino,” Ayo said. “Kung sino man ‘yun, ‘yun ang dedesisyunan ng management and the coaching staff.”

“We’re going to look for a player who is versatile enough na makakapuno sa kulang namin, especially sa depensa. Ang butas namin talaga ay ceiling. Kulang kami sa malaki, and at the same time, kulang kami sa offense,” he added.

The FiberXers have a combined 3-19 win-loss record during the two conferences in the 2023–2024 PBA season.
