PBBM urged to provide incentives to Pinoy world boxing champions

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. was urged to provide incentives to the Philippines’ two world boxing champions, Melvin Jerusalem (WBC minimumweight) and Petro Taduran (IBF minimumweight).

Commenting on a Facebook post by Marcos, Filipino boxing matchmaker Edmond Dellosa said Jerusalem and Taduran should be given the same rewards the Chief Executive gave to the Filipino athletes who competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics, as they also made the country proud.

“Sana po President Bongbong Marcos bilang nasa industriya ng Philippine boxing, pati din po mga current world boxing champion natin ngayon mabigyan nyo rin po ng ganyang incentives since nagbigay din sila ng karangalan sa bayan,” Dellosa said.

“Tulad ni WBC World Champ Melvin Oliva Jerusalem at IBF World Champion Pedro G. Taduran. Matinding hirap din po dinanas nila sa training para maging Champion sa kanilang larangan. Sana makarating po ito sa inyo. Maraming salamat po,” he added.

Jerusalem claimed the WBC world minimumweight title after a split decision victory over Japanese fighter Yudai Shigeoka on March 31 at the International Conference Hall in Nagoya, Japan.

Taduran, on the other hand, bagged the IBF minimumweight championship after a ninth-round technical knockout win over Japanese Ginjiro Shigeoka on July 28 at the Shiga Daihatsu Arena in Otsu, Japan.

President Marcos on Tuesday rewarded P2 million in cash rewards (P1 million from the Office of the President and P1 million from PAGCOR) to each of the 22 Filipino Olympians, while their coaches will receive half a million each.

This is on top of the P20 million that gymnast Carlos Yulo will receive for his two-gold medal feat and the P2 million each that boxers Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas will get for their bronze medal finishes, as mandated under Republic Act (RA) 10699.
