PSC refutes doctor’s claims, asserts national athletes have medical budget

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) reacted to a Twitter thread posted by a doctor who claimed that a national athlete did not receive government medical benefits.

The PSC refuted orthopedic specialist Robbine Meriales’ posts, calling them “malicious.”

“The post maliciously dragged the PSC that seeking medical attention requires a consultation fee. It was also mentioned that the athlete does not receive meal allowances from the agency,” said the PSC.

“The PSC clarifies that all national athletes are being given monthly and meal allowance and medical assistance, including hospitalization, medicine, nutrition guidance, psychological, physical therapy, and other examinations, with or without (the) Olympics.”

The PSC stated that it is their duty to provide care for national athletes.
Meanwhile, the agency reminded the national sports associations (NSAs), which sanction the athletes, to monitor their members.

“Through the endorsements of assistance needed by the NSAs, the agency provides services for our national athletes as deemed necessary by their respective NSAs. These services go through proper channels to treat our athletes with utmost care and efficiency,” said the PSC.

“With this, we ask NSAs to always monitor and check on our athletes so as to accommodate and provide our athletes the proper treatment and welfare that they deserve.”

Meriales earlier said that a national athlete was referred to him for consultation and had to undergo a series of tests without a “medical budget from the government.”
He mentioned that the athlete’s testing fees were covered by his friends who made the referral.

“I’m happy that someone cares enough to support these poor athletes,” he said in one of his posts.
