Villegas takes bronze after loss to Turkish boxer

Pinay boxer Aira Villegas pocketed a bronze medal after bowing to Türkiye’s Buse Naz Çakıroğlu in the semis of the women’s 50 kg class in the Paris Olympics early Wednesday, Manila time.

The third-seed handled Villegas well, taking a unanimous verdict to advance to the gold medal round.

Despite her loss, Villegas became the second female boxer to win an Olympic medal for the Philippines.

A standing eight-count in the first round put Villegas behind on the scorecards, giving Çakıroğlu a 10-8 headway.
Villegas managed to score a few in the second round, but the Turkish fighter tagged her with counters, including a right uppercut.

Three of the judges scored it 30-27 for Çakıroğlu, while the other two had it 30-26, also for Türkiye.

Nesthy Petecio is now the last woman standing in Olympic boxing for the Philippines, with a semi-final fight coming up in the women’s 57 kg class.
