Otom finishes 6th in Paralympics backstroke final

Filipina Paralympian Angel Mae Otom didn’t reach the podium but made an impression in her Paralympics debut.

She clocked in at 44.00 seconds, finishing sixth in the women’s 50-meter backstroke S5 final at La Defense Arena in Paris early Wednesday morning, Manila time.

China’s Lu Dong won the gold with a time of 37.51 seconds, successfully defending her title. Fellow Chinese swimmers He Shenggao (39.93s) took the silver, while Liu Yu (42.37s) claimed the bronze.

Otom’s Paralympic Games debut showed promise on Tuesday morning when she clocked 44.03 seconds, finishing in seventh place and earning a spot in the backstroke final.
Although slightly nervous, Otom cherished her first experience in the Paralympic spotlight.

“Kinakabahan din po, pero overall masaya din. Maganda ‘yung experience. Sobrang proud na nakapunta ako dito,” she said.
