PSL cites ‘ghost month’ for delayed payments to league partners

The Pilipinas Super League (PSL) has cited “ghost month” as the reason for delayed payments to their league partners, including the TV station covering the games, the production company, and the venues.

PSL president Cris Bautista assured that the league is working to resolve all financial obligations promptly, ahead of the new season’s opening in November.

“‘Yung ghost month nga, isa na ‘yun (sa mga rason ng delay),” Bautista said in an interview with DWAR Abante Radyo’s SPORTSNOW program. “Ngayon lang (nangyari itong delay of payments), ang tagal tagal na namin, ngayon lang naman ‘yan.”

Ghost month, also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival, is a Chinese tradition during which it’s believed that ghosts and spirits, including those of deceased ancestors, emerge from the lower realm.

Many believe it’s an unlucky time to start new ventures or engage in business dealings, as the heightened activity of the spiritual realm could negatively influence outcomes.

The financial struggles of the PSL were first highlighted in Bill Velasco’s The Game of My Life column in The Philippine Star, where he reported that the league had received four demand letters concerning unpaid obligations totaling approximately P23 million.

Velasco noted that the PSL’s financial troubles began in April, when payments to TV producers were delayed, which in turn affected compensation for commentators and production staff involved in the games.

He further revealed that by July, even the PSL employees faced delayed or missed payments, and PBA legends overseeing tournaments nationwide were also affected.

However, Bautista disputed Velasco’s claim of a P23 million financial obligation, clarifying that the amount owed is closer to “P12 million something.”

“Hindi. Hindi totoo ‘yung (P23 million), mga 12 million something mga ganyan, May mga hindi pa nabayarang iba ‘yan,” Bautista said.
