The coaching situation for the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers has been somewhat confusing to some Thomasians, but it seems to be working after four games in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament.
At times, head coach Alfredo “Pido” Jarencio gives instructions, while in other moments, assistant coach Juno Sauler takes the lead. Even San Miguel Corporation sports director Alfrancis Chua offers his insights during games.
A UST insider explained to Fastbreak the unique coaching setup within the UST Growling Tigers.
“Tulong tulong lahat,” a UST insider said. “Si coach Pido pa rin talaga ang parang pinakatimon ng lahat pero siyempre nagbibigay din ng kanilang inputs ‘yung ibang coaches.”
“Sa defensive adjustments, mostly si coach Juno ang gumagawa nun, and also siyempre boss Al is also a former coach, so kapag may nakita siyang puwedeng adjustments, pinapaabot niya kay coach Pido,” he added.
The Growling Tigers currently sit in second place in the standings with a 3-1 win-loss record, trailing behind the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons and the De La Salle University Green Archers, both of whom hold an unbeaten 3-0 record.
