Marion Magat drills game-winner as Caloocan ousts Manila

Marion Magat converted a go-ahead inside basket as the Caloocan Batang Kankaloo ousted the Manila SV Batang Sampaloc SGA Stars 67-66 in Game 2 of the MPBL Northern Division quarterfinals on Saturday night at the Paco Arena in Manila.

Down 61-66 with 38 seconds left, the Batang Kankaloo got a split free throw from Paul Sanga and a three-pointer from Jeramer Cabanag to cut the deficit to 65-66 with 20 seconds left.

Caloocan then forced Manila to an inbound turnover, which led to an inside conversion by Magat from a pass by Cabanag to take the lead at 67-66 with nine seconds remaining in the contest.

Manila still had a chance to snatch the win, but Carl Bryan Cruz’s jumper was blocked by Caloocan’s Irven Palencia. With a second left, Cruz once again missed on an easy inside shot attempt at the buzzer.

Magat finished the match with four points, six rebounds, and two steals, while Cabanag was the lone double-digit scorer for Caloocan with 15 markers as they swept the best-of-three series, 2-0.

“Para sa amin naman team kami eh, kapag may nawala sa amin, next man up kami, ready lang kami kung sino ang huhugutin sa amin ni coach,” Cabanag said in a post-game interview.

Joshua Torralba top-scored with 21 points, including five three-pointers; Jorey Napoles added a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds; and Mike Tolomia contributed 10 for Manila, which was without center Gregory Slaughter due to suspension.

Slaughter, a former PBA top-overall pick by the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings, was hit with a one-game suspension for his two flagrant foul infraction during their Game 1 loss to Caloocan.

Meanwhile, the San Juan Knights-Go for Gold also moved on to the next round after an 82-70 win over the Rizal XentroMall Golden Coolers in Game 2 of their North Division quarterfinals series.

Michael Calisaan finished with 22 points for the Golden Coolers.

The Batang Kankaloo and the Knights are set to square off in the Northern Division semifinals, tentatively scheduled to start next week.
