Ateneo defeats NCAA champs St. Benilde to finish fifth in Shakey’s volleyball

The Ateneo Blue Eagles solidified their status as a team to watch in the upcoming UAAP season with a hard-fought victory over the NCAA defending champions, the St. Benilde Lady Blazers, on Saturday in the Shakey’s Super League (SSL).

The Blue Eagles triumphed in four tight sets: 26-24, 25-16, 21-25, 25-23.

Senior players AC Miner and Lyann de Guzman were named MVPs of the match, both scoring in double digits with 13 and 20 points, respectively.

Ateneo captain Lyann de Guzman refused to go down without a fight, rallying her teammates during the game to showcase the hard work they had put in during training, which ultimately led to their triumphant exit from the SSL.

“Sabi ko nga, ilaban lang nila. Andito kami magtutulungan sa isa’t isa,” she said.

Miner, meanwhile, highlighted that the victory showcases their progress as a rookie-laden squad and serves as a reminder that they should not be underestimated.

“Kahit hindi kami nakarating sa semis; this match proved us na kaya naming makipagsapalaran sa dulo ng year na ‘to,” she shared.

Fans across cyberspace celebrated alongside Ateneo, admitting that while expectations for the rookie-laden squad were modest, their unwavering support never wavered.
