ZUS Coffee Thunderbelle Thea Gagate finds herself in hot water after expressing vocal support for the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons despite being a De La Salle University (DLSU) alumna.
DLSU fans criticized her for making “insensitive” statements congratulating UP on winning the UAAP Season 87 Men’s Basketball championship.
Since the season began, Gagate has regularly attended UP games to support her boyfriend Sean Alter and brother Seven.
“I’m very happy for my boyfriend. Happy din ako sa team nila na finally, nakakuha sila ng championship. Hopefully, next year, maulit ulit,” Gagate said in a video that has garnered 1.4 million views as of writing.
However, several DLSU supporters found her remarks distasteful, citing the Green Archers’ tough loss in the finals and claiming that Gagate, as a former Lady Spiker, owed more loyalty to her alma mater.
Below are some of the comments:
“Such a turn-off, lol. Wishing UP a b2b is impliedly wishing for the defeat of the school you represented for years. You should’ve just kept your thoughts to yourself. This is a big disrespect to the community that supported you all out just the first half of this year ” — @kimykkk10/X
“”Hopefully next year makuha nila ulit,” girl, be serious. Not the right thing to say when you know well the community is grieving.” —@kookoosnaps/X
“Kaya di ko masabi na bagwa si jols eh, kasi manalo o matalo, proud parin siya sa ALMA MATER niya ” —@fortreya/X
“Ano bang ginawa sayo ng DLSU community… y r u like that? Di naman ganyan si Jett Manuel last year. beh ily pero sana naman in-acknowledge mo rin GA. Kung tutuusin nga super supportive ng GA sa LS.” —@NotDKPodlesnykh/X
“Anong support e bangko naman mga ‘yan”—@henlovince/X
Using Thea’s contributions to the Lady Spikers’ successes in recent years, some fans have also come to her defense.
“Thea Gagate does not need to prove her loyalty to La Salle to anyone, not even to her most passionate fans. This is the same player who transferred from Jhocson to Taft for the chance to rep the green and white. Using a spontaneous remark vs. her is just unfair.” —@rusvolleyteam8/X
“Hindi ko gets mga fans na inis dito kay Thea. I mean, Nasa UP BF at Kapatid niya. Of course sila ang isusupport ni Thea. Proud lang siguro siya? Hind namn ibig sabihin non nag traydor siya sa DLSU.” —@QueenHellaxx
“Mas marami pang nagawa si thea para sa dlsu kesa sa inyong mga reklamador.”—@mereophie/X
“I don’t see anything wrong here. She didn’t even mention la salle. Y’all are just a bunch of crybabies. You know Thea would genuinely congratulate ga had they won. but that’s not the case, and she has all the right to celebrate the win of her boyfriend and brother.” —@lexoriel/X
Prior to this controversy, Thea had already faced criticism for wearing a maroon shirt during one of the final matchups between UP and DLSU.
Since then, Thea has remained silent on the matter, choosing not to address the backlash.
