The Philippines men’s football team suffered a 4-3 aggregate loss to Thailand in the second leg of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup semifinals in Bangkok late Monday, after conceding a goal in extra time.
The nationals fought valiantly in front of a hostile crowd at Rajamangala Stadium, but the Thais made sure to dominate possession following their upset loss in the first leg.
Peeradol Chamrasamee gave Thailand the lead in the 37th minute, and Patrik Gustavsson doubled their advantage in the 54th minute, putting the Philippines under pressure.
However, Bjørn Martin Kristensen came to the rescue with a crucial equalizer in the 84th minute, leveling the aggregate score at 3-3.
With no winner after 90 minutes, the game extended into extra time.
In the 116th minute, Suphanat Mueanta scored a header, giving Thailand a 4-3 aggregate advantage and sealing their victory.
The Philippines entered the second leg with a 2-1 advantage, marking their first-ever win against Thailand in 52 years.
Despite the loss, this marked a historic semifinal appearance for the Philippines, who had not reached this stage in years.
It was also their first time playing at Rajamangala in a decade, when they last played in a second-leg semifinal of the ASEAN Championship.
