Canino sees UAAP Season 86 setback as chance to bounce back

De La Salle University (DLSU) star Angel Canino is set to make the most of UAAP Season 87, expressing her determination to contribute in any way possible to the team.

Speaking at the league’s press conference on Thursday, Canino shared that the Lady Spikers are using their Season 86 setback—where they fell short of a back-to-back championship and settled for third place—as motivation.

“Sobrang laking motivation sa amin ‘yun as a team, lalo na sa akin kasi marami akong games na nawala,” said the former UAAP Rookie MVP, reflecting on her absence for most of last season due to a right arm injury.

“Ayoko na ulit mangyari ‘yun na hindi ako makapag-contribute sa team—nandoon lang ako sa gilid. Gusto ko talaga na makakatulong ako hangga’t makakaya ko sa team,” she added.

Canino also emphasized the importance of the culture instilled by her seniors, which she hopes to carry forward with the current Lady Spikers roster.

“I think ‘yun ‘yung pinakanakuha kong lesson sa kanila—na kahit ano man pinagdadaanan, walang bibitaw sa amin. Dapat mas strong pa ‘yung bond and communication namin sa loob kahit ang dami na namin pinagdaanan,” she said.

Now in her third UAAP season, Canino is determined to lead La Salle back to its rightful place as a women’s volleyball powerhouse.
