Gilas Pilipinas star Justin Brownlee remains grateful for the opportunity to represent the Philippines and is committed to giving back to the sport that changed his life.
“I really want to give back to basketball,” Brownlee told Philippine Daily Inquirer. “Hopefully, I can work with younger kids and contribute to the growth of basketball here in the Philippines.”
The Ginebra import joined fellow PBA stars Scottie Thompson and Jayson Castro in supporting Milka Romero and the 1Pacman party-list’s advocacy for sports and youth development.
Brownlee officially became a Filipino citizen in January 2023 through a bill filed by outgoing 1Pacman Rep. Mikee Romero. This paved the way for him to lead Gilas Pilipinas to its first Asian Games gold medal in 61 years.
He also played a key role in Gilas’ stunning win over world No. 6 Latvia in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, ending a 64-year drought against European teams.
Now, Brownlee is backing Romero’s daughter, Milka, in continuing 1Pacman’s mission to grow grassroots basketball in the country.
“Anything that benefits the country, I want to be part of it,” he said. “Now that I’m a Filipino citizen, I take pride in these things. Whether my role is big or small, I want to help in any way I can.”
