TNT Tropang Giga guard Rey Nambatac offered his PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals MVP to teammate Jayson Castro, who was sidelined the entire series due to a full-thickness patellar tendon tear injury.
According to Nambatac, it was through the guidance of Castro that he was able to step up in their grueling seven-game championship series with the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings.
“Pinasasalamatan ko si kuya Jayson, ‘yung naging mentor ko talaga nitong series na ito,” Nambatac said in a speech after receiving his Finals MVP award. “Kung hindi dahil sa (guidance niya), hindi ako makakapag step up.”
Nambatac, who was acquired by the Tropang Giga via a trade from the Blackwater Bossing during the offseason, averaged 13.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.0 steals in the title series.
The former Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights guard emerged as the Tropang Giga’s starting point guard after Castro went down with a season-ending injury during their semifinals series with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.
