Thompson, Brownlee lift Ginebra to 3-2 edge in PBA Finals

Scottie Thompson and Justin Brownlee took charge in crunch time as Barangay Ginebra pulled off a 73-66 comeback win over TNT Tropang Giga in Game 5 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Down 65-66 with over four minutes left, Thompson delivered back-to-back baskets to put the Gin Kings ahead before Brownlee sealed the win with four straight points in the final minutes.

Brownlee, playing through a thumb injury, posted 18 points, 14 rebounds, and five assists, while Thompson tallied 16 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Japeth Aguilar and Maverick Ahanmisi added 11 points apiece as Ginebra moved one win away from their 16th PBA title.

“Even if Justin made big shots down the stretch, it was Scottie’s inspiration that turned the tide for us,” said head coach Tim Cone.

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Rey Nambatac led TNT with 19 points each, but the Tropang Giga struggled after leading by 10 points in the first half.

Game 6 is set for Wednesday night.
