Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James believes his son, Bronny James, has used criticism as motivation to keep improving in his rookie NBA season.
Following the Lakers’ 146-115 loss to the Chicago Bulls on Saturday, LeBron referenced Bronny’s recent interview with The Athletic’s Joe Vardon, emphasizing how his son has embraced the skepticism surrounding his game.
“He hears everything and uses it as motivation. But he’s here for a reason, and he showed that the other night,” LeBron said, per Bleacher Report’s Joseph Zucker.
The four-time MVP was referring to Bronny’s 17-point performance in the Lakers’ 118-89 defeat to the Milwaukee Bucks last Thursday, where the 20-year-old rookie shot 7-of-10 from the field, grabbed three rebounds, and dished out five assists.
Despite being a second-round pick (55th overall), no rookie in the 2024-25 class has faced more scrutiny than Bronny. Critics questioned whether he deserved to be drafted at all, and his numbers—2.3 points on 32.7% shooting in 23 appearances—have done little to silence them.
Bronny acknowledged that dealing with the spotlight hasn’t been easy.
“My first thought about everything is I always try to just let it go through one ear and out the other, put my head down, come to work, and be positive every day,” he told Vardon.
“But sometimes it just fuels me a little bit. I see everything that people are saying, and people think, like, I’m a f–king robot, like I don’t have any feelings or emotions.”
With the Lakers fighting to stay in the top six of the Western Conference, Bronny’s minutes will likely remain limited. He played just seven minutes and scored two points against Chicago.
