University of Santo Tomas women’s volleyball program director Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes expressed his dismay over the increasing trend of players leaving UST despite already being part of its well-established system.
Reyes, who also coaches the Junior Golden Tigresses and the Golden Tigresses, said that while he’s happy their players are gaining recognition from other schools, he’s disheartened by the timing and manner of their departure.
Reyes questioned why players still feel the need to transfer when they are already studying and training at a university known for its competitive volleyball culture and academic excellence.
He believes UST’s growing grassroots success is the reason other schools are targeting their athletes, which is both validating and painful.
“We are happy na napapansin ‘yung grassroots program namin… Pero medyo masakit lang kasi nawawala sa hindi tamang panahon,” he said.
Still, Reyes said his main concern remains the welfare and education of the young athletes, praying that those who transfer are properly supported.
Wholeheartedly kami na nakafocus nung kinuha namin sila,” he said.
