Alex Eala is looking to make a strong start at the 2025 Madrid Open as she prepares to face Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova in the opening round of the WTA 1000 event.
Eala, currently ranked No. 72 in the world, will take on the World No. 64, Tomova, on Wednesday. A win would set up a high-profile second-round clash against defending champion and World No. 2 Iga Swiatek, who received a first-round bye.
The 19-year-old Filipina previously stunned Swiatek in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open—one of the biggest upsets of the year—which helped propel her into the WTA Top 100 for the first time in her career.
Also in Eala’s section of the draw is fifth seed Madison Keys, another player she defeated in Miami during the third round.
Eala is aiming to bounce back from a recent round-of-16 loss to Hungary’s Panna Udvardy at the Oeiras Ladies Open in Portugal.
