JRU stuns San Beda in OT comeback at Filoil Preseason Cup; Arellano wins third straight

Jose Rizal University mounted a gutsy rally from eight points down late in regulation to shock San Beda University, 75-74, in overtime in the Playtime Cares Filoil EcoOil 18th Preseason Cup on Wednesday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Rookie Sean Salvador took center stage in the win, finishing with 25 points, including clutch three-pointers in regulation and overtime that propelled the Heavy Bombers to a 3-5 record.

Trailing 58-66 with just over two minutes left in regulation, JRU unleashed an 8-0 blitz capped by two triples from Salvador and a key basket from Jay Garupil to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Jayson Castillo, Yuri Duque, and Salvador conspired to push JRU ahead, 73-68. San Beda responded with a free throw from Bismarck Lina and a basket from Jomel Puno, but JRU kept its composure with two Garupil free throws to make it 75-71.

Yukien Andrada buried a triple in the dying seconds to bring the final margin to one, but time ran out on the Red Lions, who dropped to 1-4.

“Masaya akong makita ‘yung laban ng mga bata. At least with Sean and Sanlea [Peñaverde] at si Argente, malayo ang mararating ng JRU,” said coach Nani Epondulan after the win.

Puno led San Beda with 23 points and eight boards in the loss.

Meanwhile, the Arellano Chiefs picked up their third consecutive win by edging the Lyceum Pirates, 78-76, to improve to 4-3.

CJ Libang top-scored with 11 points and six rebounds, while T-Mc Ongotan, Maverick Vinoya, and Dre Miller added 10 markers apiece for the Chiefs. Lyceum slid to 1-5.
