Athletes of the Week: Columbus High Football Team

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) - The Columbus High Blue Devils football team hoped to start the 2025 season in a big way. For the past 5 years their season always started with defeated. This season Columbus High flipped the script on Miller County. The Devils snapped their season opening losing streak with at 35-17 victory over Miller County. Last season the Pirates defeated the Blue Devils 38-9.

"It was awesome. We were moving up and down and the field. Just everyone was moving up and down the field and where they needed to be and everything was really clicking," said senior linebacker and running back Woodruff Holland.

One of the standout players from the Blue Devils victory was quarterback Andrew Smith IV. The junior signal caller rushed for three touchdowns against the Pirates . Smith and his teammates wanted to set a new tone for the 2025 season.

"I know the first game is a big indicator on how the rest of the season is going to go. So I definitely wanted to start off with a strong start. So it can lead on for the rest of the season," said junior quarterback and free safety Andrew Smith IV.

This is Robert Peters second season as the Blue Devils head coach. He expected growing pains during his first year on the sidelines for Columbus High, but he's proud of the progress his team has made so far.

"First year growing pains we're starting to see some growing pains. 2nd year we're starting to see some growth and be able to polish a little bit. They actually carried out assignments and did exactly what they were supposed to do. One of the beautiful things of being a coach is a team matures and they grow and they develop and you get to see it happen before their eyes," said Coach Peters.

The season just started, but the Blue Devils can be special with the talent on their roster.

"I think we have a good chance to go far. You know we have some talent, some real talent. You know we're still growing. We have a long ways to go and it's going to be great," said Holland.

The Blue Devils next game will be a home game against the Greenville Patriots. Congratulations to our newest Athletes of the Week the Columbus High Blue Devils football team.
