Farewell to a hero: ALEA K-9 Matyko remembered for loyal service to Alabama

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WRBL) - The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is mourning the sudden loss of active-duty K-9 Matyko, who died Tuesday, Aug. 12, after suffering a medical emergency. He was 7 years old.

Matyko, a highly trained and decorated member of ALEA's Highway Patrol Division, was being transported to a veterinary hospital in Huntsville by his handler when he passed away.

Joining ALEA in 2019, Matyko served in multiple regions of the state — beginning in the Gadsden area, later in Montgomery, and most recently in the Decatur/Huntsville area — providing critical support to law enforcement operations in northern and central Alabama.

"Matyko was more than a highly trained working dog, he was a trusted partner and valued member of the ALEA family," said ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor. "He not only contributed to countless successful operations, but he also built strong partnerships with local law enforcement agencies in every community he served."

Specializing in narcotics detection and interdiction, Matyko played a key role in keeping dangerous drugs and firearms off Alabama's roads.

"K-9 Matyko's commitment and courage were second to none," said Colonel Jonathan Archer, Director of ALEA's Department of Public Safety. "He stood side by side with our Troopers on the front lines, making a real difference in the fight against illegal narcotics. Losing a K-9 partner is devastating, and we honor his service and sacrifice."

Matyko's passing comes just days after the loss of retired ALEA K-9 Pici, who died Aug. 2 after battling bone cancer. Both leave behind a proud legacy of service and dedication to protecting the people of Alabama.
