Free rain barrels to be given away at Auburn stormwater management workshops

AUBURN, Ala. (WRBL) — The City of Auburn will host rain barrel workshops, promoting sustainable water use and stormwater management, with the first of four workshops being hosted on Saturday, Aug. 23.

City officials say attendees will receive a free rain barrel in order to collect and reuse rainwater.

During the workshops, residents will be able to pick from three barrel styles — each worth nearly $80. The workshop is made possible partly due to a state grant and partnership effort between the city and Auburn University.

"Particularly here in Auburn, there seems to be a very strong interest in caring for the water," said Marla Smith, Watershed Division Manager for the City of Auburn. "You know we all share this watershed together, we're all neighbors in one big bowl, where we all share water resources. It seems like the general public demonstrates a high level of education and also compassion towards this issue."

The workshop will include lessons on installation, maintenance and troubleshooting for new water reservoirs.

To accommodate interest from the community, the city added another rain barrel workshop on Oct. 4 from 8:45-10:00 a.m. The Aug. 23 workshop is full, but openings are still available for the Sept. 13, Sept. 20 and Oct. 4 workshops.

Those interested in participating must register ahead of time online. Each workshop will be limited to 15 people. Complementary breakfast and coffee will be provided. If you are a Lee County resident unable to attend, you may still register to receive a free rain barrel and instructional materials.

The free workshops will be held at the Nunn-Winston House at Kiesel Park (520 Chadwick Lane).
