Gilas trails New Zealand at halftime in must-win FIBA Asia Cup clash

Gilas Pilipinas is down by 14 points at halftime, 41-55, against New Zealand in their crucial 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Group D matchup Thursday night (Manila time) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The Tall Blacks surged ahead behind hot three-point shooting and held a 23-18 lead after the first quarter, extending the gap by the break.

Gilas started with Scottie Thompson and Dwight Ramos at the guard spots, Calvin Oftana and Justin Brownlee at forward, and AJ Edu at center.

The national squad, coached by Tim Cone, is hoping to bounce back from a frustrating 95-87 loss to Chinese Taipei in their tournament opener. Meanwhile, New Zealand entered the game riding momentum from a dominant 100-78 win over Iraq.

A win is vital for Gilas to stay in the hunt for a quarterfinal berth in the continental tournament.
