Noli Eala sees positives in Alex Eala’s US Open exit

Former PBA Commissioner Noli Eala said there are still many positives to take despite the early exit of his niece, Alexandra “Alex” Eala, from the US Open.

Eala’s run ended Thursday morning (Manila time) after falling to world No. 95 Cristina Bucșa of Spain, 4-6, 3-6, in the round of 64.

On his X account, the elder Eala noted how Bucșa was in command throughout the match with her deep groundstrokes, deadly backhand, and powerful serves that neutralized the 20-year-old Filipina.

“Bucsa defeats Eala 6-4, 6-3. Not the result we wanted. Bucsa played very well with deep ground strokes, a deadly backhand, and powerful serves,” Eala posted.

“Alex missed some break point opportunities going 3/9. Still a breakthrough. Time to build on the positives. Mabuhay Alex!”

Eala, who stunned world No. 15 Clara Tauson in the first round, bowed out of her maiden US Open women’s singles main draw but leaves New York with a historic win and valuable experience to build on.

The Filipina had been riding the momentum of her headline-grabbing debut, where she rallied from a 1-5 hole in the decider to upset Tauson in a dramatic 7-6 (13-11) third-set tiebreaker.

With her second-round appearance, Eala is assured of at least $154,000 (₱8.7 million) in prize money—her biggest career earnings so far.
