PHENIX CITY, Ala. (WRBL) — The Phenix City Police Department announced on Thursday that a third person was taken into custody after being accused of ballot harvesting.
It was a follow-up from an Aug. 13 release from the police department regarding an absentee voting fraud investigation.
District 3 City Council Candidate Jamar Gayles was taken into custody on Thursday for two counts of attempt to commit absentee voter fraud, a Class C felony and one count of conspiracy to commit absentee voter fraud, a Class B misdemeanor.

Initially, Thalia Hardin and Valerie Carter were taken into custody on Monday by Phenix City authorities.
According to the Phenix City Police Department, the investigation was prompted after the city clerk's office received multiple reports of unusual activity.
The investigation revealed that Hardin and Carter advised investigators that they were volunteering for Gayles and allegedly engaged in illegal ballot harvesting.

Harden faces four counts of absentee voter fraud, a Class C felony and one count of absentee voter violations, a Class A misdemeanor.
Carter is facing five counts of absentee voter fraud, a Class C felony and one count of absentee Voter violations, a Class A misdemeanor.
The Alabama Secretary of State and the Russell County District Attorney's Offices were involved in the investigation.
