NBA legend John Stockton took a swipe at LeBron James, saying the four-time champion often chose the easy route by joining title-ready teams instead of building from within.
In a video interview posted on Threads, the Utah Jazz icon said he prefers the old-school mentality of staying loyal to one franchise and grinding for success—something he believes LeBron avoided throughout much of his storied career.
“I like where guys tighten their belt up and say, ‘Let’s go to work. We just got to get better, play harder, play smarter instead of, ‘Huh, where’s the grass greener?’” Stockton said. “I’m gonna go there and win a championship. I think it devalues that. You’re not climbing the mountain; you’re taking a helicopter to the top.”
Stockton, widely regarded as one of the greatest point guards of all time, spent his entire 19-season NBA career with the Jazz, reaching the playoffs every year. He and longtime teammate Karl Malone led the team to back-to-back NBA Finals appearances in 1997 and 1998, both losses to Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls.
LeBron, meanwhile, has faced criticism for moving between franchises. He formed superteams in Miami with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, then later rejoined the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014, pushing for a trade to bring in Kevin Love alongside Kyrie Irving. His most recent championship came with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.
While LeBron’s decisions have led to titles and records, Stockton believes the path matters just as much as the destination.
