WASHINGTON, D.C. (WRBL) — It was announced on Thursday that United States Senators Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock began a new funding effort to fight the opioid epidemic in Georgia.
The pair announced that $900,000 will be provided in funding through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to support efforts across Georgia to fight the opioid crisis.
"Like so many Georgians, I've lost friends to the opioid epidemic. These resources, which I've secured with bipartisan support, will fund efforts to prevent and treat addiction, save lives, and help address the opioid crisis," Ossoff said.

Medlink Georgia, Inc., New Horizons Community Service Board and Hospital Authority of Jenkins County are the recipients of the federal grant, as each will receive $300,000.
"As a pastor, I've sat with families as they've struggled with the anguish of a loved one suffering from addiction," Warnock said. "So, I understand how the opioid epidemic has devastated communities across the country and impacted countless families right here in Georgia."
He added, "that's why I fought alongside Senator Ossoff to secure these federal funds to give our healthcare and treatment agencies all the tools they need to combat this epidemic."
Ossoff continues to lead in his efforts to combat the opioid crisis in the state after his bipartisan Detection Equipment and Technology Evaluation to Counter the Threat of (DETECT) Fentanyl and Xylazine Act was passed by the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. It also had bipartisan support to strengthen the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's capacity to detect fentanyl and xylazine at ports of entry and better prevent them from crossing the border.
Last year, Ossoff provided $7 million to the Georgia Criminal Justice Coordinating Council to strengthen Georgia's response to the epidemic.
