Deadly shooting cancels Lanett–LaFayette High matchup; victim identified, arrest made

LaFAYETTE Ala. (WRBL) – A high school football game between Lanett and LaFayette was canceled Friday night after gunfire erupted outside the stadium along Alabama Avenue East. 42-year-old Eric Calloway was killed in the shooting.

Authorities say 49-year-old Brint Bailey was arrested in connection with the case. Bailey was booked on September 19, 2025, into the Chambers County Jail, where he remains in custody. Investigators have not released a motive or what they believe led to the shooting.

Mayor Kenneth Vines released the following statement regarding the incident:

"Last night, a tragic loss occurred in our beloved city. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased.Echoing others who have already posted, this incident was not related to last night's football game and should not be associated with LaFayette High School and the City of LaFayette. Out of respect for the family, and because the investigation of the incident is presently ongoing, please do not post about it. Be assured this incident was isolated, an arrest has been made, relative to what happened, law enforcement is not aware of any further threat to the community. I want to thank the Public Safety Department for their swift response and action at the scene of the incident," said Mayor Kenneth Vines.

A fan inside the stadium shared a photo with WRBL, circling a house outside stadium fencing where the shooting happened. In the image, the glow of blue police lights can be seen in the background as officers responded.

Fans and players were sent home immediately after the incident, and the remainder of the football game was canceled while investigators responded to the scene.
