Fil-Spanish Dro Fernandez makes La Liga debut with FC Barcelona

Filipino-Spanish rising star Pedro “Dro” Fernández finally made his La Liga debut for FC Barcelona in their 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad on Sunday night (Monday in Manila) at the Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain.

The 17-year-old midfielder earned a spot in Hansi Flick’s starting lineup after injuries sidelined veterans Raphinha and Joan Garcia.

In 45 minutes of play, Fernández did not score but completed 25 passes, helping Barcelona secure the win that pushed them to the top of the standings with 19 points on six wins and a draw.

Fernández had already worn the Barça jersey in a preseason friendly last July, scoring in a 3-1 victory against Japan’s Vissel Kobe at the Misaki Park Stadium in Kobe.

Born in Galicia to a Galician father and a Filipino mother, Fernández became only the second player of Filipino descent to feature for Barcelona—following the legendary Ilonggo striker Paulino Alcántara, who debuted for the club 113 years ago.

With Barcelona eyeing a second straight La Liga crown under Flick, Fernández’s debut has marked him as one of the most promising young players to watch this season. (AC)
