The Gilas Pilipinas Youth recovered from a stinging opening-day loss to Chinese Taipei by edging out Indonesia, 65-60, in the FIBA U16 Asia Cup 2025 on Monday night at the Mbank Arena in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Coming off a 106-82 defeat to Chinese Taipei on Sunday, the Nationals entered the match in low spirits but showed resilience in a rivalry clash where an upset loomed large.
The game was tied at 56-all with under five minutes left before Andwele Cabañero broke through with a go-ahead layup. Jolo Pascual then drilled a crucial three-pointer to extend the lead to 63-57 with just 38 seconds left, while Prince Cariño sealed the win by cleaning up after Ethan Tan-Chi’s missed free throws in the dying seconds.
Tan-Chi led Gilas with 12 points and 5 rebounds, Pascual added 11 points and 5 assists, while Cabañero contributed 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals.
Despite shooting only 30% from the field against Indonesia’s 34%, the Filipinos dominated the boards, 52-42, and dished out more assists, 15-6. They also tallied 5 blocks compared to Indonesia’s 4, though they committed more turnovers, 20-19.
