Indonesia’s Janice Tjen rallied from an early deficit to snatch the opening set, 6-4, against Filipina tennis ace Alexandra “Alex” Eala in their quarterfinal showdown at the WTA 125 São Paulo Open in Brazil.
The 20-year-old Eala surged ahead 3-1, but Tjen responded with a blistering run, winning five of the next six games to steal the first set.
The matchup is historic, marking the first-ever Southeast Asian quarterfinal encounter in WTA history.
Eala, seeded third, reached the last eight after ousting Argentina’s Julia Riera, 6-1, 6-4, on Wednesday night (Thursday morning in Manila). That victory extended her winning streak to seven matches, carrying over her momentum from a title-winning run at the Guadalajara 125 Open in Mexico last week—where she became the first Filipina to capture a WTA crown.
Tjen, meanwhile, booked her quarterfinal spot after a commanding 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Martina Okáľová.
