Opelika removes Miss America signs honoring Mallory Hagan after Kirk comments

OPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) - The City of Opelika has taken down the "Home of Mallory Hagan Miss America 2013" signs after more than a decade, a decision that has split the community with both sharp criticism and strong support.

Mayor Gary Fuller ordered the signs removed, saying he has the authority to do so. The move followed a petition and growing backlash after a video surfaced of Hagan criticizing conservative activist Charlie Kirk, which some residents viewed as divisive.

Hagan could not be reached for comment.

On Friday afternoon, the city released a statement defending the action and stressing Opelika's public image must reflect unity, not controversy.

"Opelika values voices that bring people together. We encourage anyone representing our city to share messages that inspire, uplift, and reflect the best of who we are," the statement read. "While free speech is a fundamental right, words also carry weight and consequences. Now more than ever, we don't need division in our city or our country."

Officials also pointed out the decision fits into Opelika's 2025–2026 citywide signage project, which will update and standardize markers across the community. Future plans include new ways to honor individuals—especially military veterans—who have given much to the city.

The removal has stirred debate across social media, with some residents praising it as a stand for community values and unity, while others criticize it as erasing Opelika's connection to Hagan—a hometown success story who captured the Miss America crown in 2013 while competing as Miss New York—and silencing free expression.
