Phenix City certifies election results, four of five council members keep seats

PHENIX CITY, Ala. (WRBL) — Four out of five city council members in Phenix City will remain the same following last week's election. The city certified the election of four city officials Tuesday morning.

According to Phenix City Mayor Eddie Lowe, the consistency of city leadership is a strength.

"Anytime you have stability, that only helps you even more as you continue to push the city forward," Lowe said.

The first Monday in November, Jasponica Florence will take the seat of councilmember at large. She replaces Dr. Griff Gordy.

Florence won the race over former Phenix City Police Chief Ray Smith with a 52% majority vote.

Lowe said the council will continue working for the benefit of the city.

"I want to think and believe that the people see the consistency of this council and the good things that we've done," Lowe said. "We haven't done everything probably to people's satisfaction, but I can say that we've done it – everything – for the right reason."

Phenix City Clerk Shannon Davis reported this year's voter turnout was weaker than it was during the 2020 election. According to Davis, votes were down in Districts One, -Two and -Three.

The clerk credited missed voting registration deadlines for part of the drop in votes.

"A lot of re-identification forms had to be filled out this year and with that, we have deadlines," Davis said.

Forms that were input ahead of time were processed, but those submitted too close to the deadline affected some citizens' ability to register.

"If the citizens would go look on our website, we're very transparent about everything. Everything was listed," Davis said, encouraging folks to check dates and register early for the next election to avoid setbacks.

Those looking to register can visit the Phenix City website for information on voter registration, polling locations and more.

The four city officials certified on Sept. 2 were:

  • Jasponica Florence, Councilmember at large
  • Vicky Carter Green, District Two
  • Arthur L. Day Jr., District Three
  • Richard Carter, Board of Education, District 2, seat 2
